During the meeting, both sides discussed increasing trade and cooperation between businesses in Abu Dhabi and Sri Lanka and opening up new doors for stronger trade and investment relations between the two sides. H.E. Al Mheiri explained to the ambassador the strategy of the Chamber in supporting businesses in the emirate considering it the representative of the private sector, showcasing its different services, which provides for its members, businessmen and investors.
For his part, ambassador Jayesinghe expressed his pleasure for visiting the Chamber for the first time, pointing out that the UAE and Sri Lanka share long history of good relations. He noted that the UAE is one of the 10 most important trade partners to Sri Lanka especially in the property, infrastructure, food and tourism sectors. Ambassador Jayesinghe added that there are around 300,000 Sri Lankan nationals working in the UAE and that the UAE is the second largest recruiter to Sri Lankan labor market. “The UAE is a perfect economic partner to the Sri Lankan business community. We can utilize this partnership to strengthen and expand trade and investments between the two sides,” he added.
In concluding his visit, Mr. Jayesinghe extended an invitation to the Chamber to participate in the 72nd Independence Day and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Sri Lanka, which is due to be celebrated next month in Abu Dhabi. The anniversary will witness a number of economic activities that would serve the private sector and the business community in general.
